Powerful Influences: Tamil Heritage Month

Image
Tamil Heritage Month is observed every January in Canada. Since 2016, the month of January has been dedicated to the Tamil community in order to raise awareness and appreciation for all of the Tamil peoples achievements and contributions up to this point in day. The month of January is also the month in which Tamils across the world celebrate Thai Pongal, popularly known as the Tamil equivalent of Thanksgiving. Thai marks the first day of January in the Tamil Solar Calendar. Thai Pongal is celebrated from Jan 14 - 17 every year. During this time, the Tamil people express their thanks to the sun for shining its light on to Mother Earth. Throughout the rest of the first week of January, Tamils express thanks to everyone and everything who makes our lives not only livable but also delightful. They show their gratitude to farmers and cows in particular. The cow is seen as a divine representative in Hinduism, and as such, the farm animal is revered and protected. Furthermore, milk is an

19 things i learnt from covid-19

COVID -19 has taught us many things over the past several months. Below I've decided to share 19 things I've learnt from this pandemic. I continue to learn from the lessons I've learnt and continue to apply them to my life on a daily basis. I hope you are also able to relate and incorporate these lessons into your daily lives too. In the meantime, don't forget to subscribe, and share my blog with your friends, family and peers so they can have a read too!  Nothing lasts forever. Be grateful for absolutely everything! Embrace new connections. Not everyone you call your friend is your friend. Treat yourself as if you were your own best friend. Speak your mind, and most importantly, stand up for yourself even if those around you decide to stand against you. Don't settle for less. Don't waste your time on things you have zero control over.  Don't forcefully control your emotions.  You weren't built to compete with your next door neighbor. Don't retaliate

How your Bedtime Affects Your Mental Health: The Draining Hours

Meet Naomi. Naomi, is a second year Biomed honors major. She is a very brilliant outgoing girl. She loves helping out her mama and papa cook and manages to keep her home nice and tidy. She does it out of all the love they shower her. She also enjoys going out. On weekends, she would go out with her friends to eat out at fancy restaurants whenever her budget permitted. Sometimes, she'd hit the Rebel on Saturdays with her friends and dance her way through the night. She knew life was short, and made sure to enjoy herself as much as she could. The one thing that gave her the utmost energy was TikTok. Just like other teens her age, she was a huge addict of the app. From time to time, she would re - create TikTok challenges with her BFF, Mariana.  After all, Naomi was one spectacular woman indeed!  Though she had one weakness that would shut her out completely. That was to be blamed on her procrastination. She always had the tendency to leave her assignments till last minute.  ~ ~ ~ One

Powerful Influences: International Women's Day

Image
International Women's Day, marked annually on March 08, is a day dedicated to honoring all women around the world for what they do, and what they strive to accomplish day in and day out. This day is also observed as a day to celebrate the social, political, economic, and cultural contributions of women, a day used to raise the importance of women's equality, and a day used to advocate accelerating gender parity around the world.  Once upon a time, the gender divisions established by society had women confined to their homes, while men were the only people able to leave their homes to work. Today, women across the globe thrive to stand equal to their male counterparts by stepping out of their homes, establishing careers of their own, and becoming successful. These achievements are to celebrated year round, not just once a year.  On behalf of International Women's Day, I've chosen to focus on eight women who have contributed significantly to the world in which we live in.

Pondering Upon the Bliss of Existence

It’s insane to hear my immigrant parents tell me this over and over again: that we live in a peaceful, democratic society, with many privileges at hand, and that our only goal is to make them proud by becoming really successful. The trauma that they’ve been through is legit, it’s lively, it has never vanished. It’s what makes them speak like such – after all, they'd obviously want nothing other than a better life for their children. But the trauma we go through is never spoken about. Why? Expectations. Obligations. Respect. We are often led by hand to fulfill the expectations of others, obey the elderly, and to always show respect. This puts us like myself at a disadvantage. I’m sure you’d be able to relate when I ask you to think about the following: When you work so hard to please others around you and make them proud, do you fail to look after yourself and most importantly, your happiness? When you work so hard to please others around you and make them proud,

Powerful Influences: Black History Month

Image
With February being Black History Month, I've decided to reflect upon 7 different quotes by 7 different prominent figures to acknowledge the history of the Black community. I hope you all enjoy reading my reflections! Also, don't forget to follow, subscribe, and let your friends know about my blog!   1. Martin Luther King Jr.    At the end of the day, light will always prevail darkness. At the end of the day, love will always defeat hate.  2. Rosa Parks   It makes more sense to fear doing the wrong thing, than doing things right.  Whether those around you fail to applause for you when you do the right thing, do it anyway, and surprise them with an electrical shock.  3. Jackie Robinson  When they say treat others the way you want to be treated, why don't you first learn to value yourself by defining your self - worth?  Self - respect is key in recognizing your value. When you learn to value yourself, you automatically learn to value everything around you. The amount of self

the very essence of humanity

Human rights are characterized as a collection of basic human rights and fundamental freedoms which, despite race, class, sex, ethnicity, and nationality, are entitled to every human being. These rights shield us from immorality and are protected by both municipal and international law from the day we are born until the day we breath our last.⁣ ⁣ Human right violations on the other hand can be defined as a form of failure caused by a country or a state to ensure the protection of our basic human rights and fundamental freedoms. These also include the failure to avoid violations committed by private individuals (i.e. domestic violence).⁣ ⁣ With us living in 2021, it is quite alarming for someone like me to notice the numerous violations of human rights taking place around the world today. Some of these breaches, as you all may already know about, exist in the following events listed below:⁣ ⁣ The BLM Movement:⁣ ⁣ The BLM Movement is classified as both a political and soc
